To Publish Your Book?
OK … all things being equal … these are hellish times to try to publish a book. That is, if you go the traditional ‘big publisher’ route.
Yet, at the same time, just about anybody can publish their own book. Which is why a whole lot of garages in North America are filled with carton after carton of slightly moldy self-published books that have never sold.
Are books, in fact, still viable? And if they are – how ARE you supposed to publish them?
Does it actually matter if you even have a published book?
The answers are yes, it’s a process, and it sure does.
Today, books are still serious credibility builders, right along side your speaking gigs, your blog, and your social media presence. Hot books published by major publishers can still reach hundreds of thousands of readers AND get you on Good Morning America. So the book is far from dead!
On the other hand, ebooks – when done right – can launch you into even broader readership in a matter of weeks, not to mention a whole new financial bracket. And the two self-publishing options, when applied correctly to you business, can even lead you to more readers, more money and more powerful relationships and networks than a major book deal.
So there are options out there … but you have to know exactly how to play them.
I really wanted to find out just which book type suits which situation, so she a hunkered down recently with traditional publishing guru Janet Goldstein. (Janet’s the editor behind many, many bestsellers including books by Wayne Dyer, Barbara Kingsolver and even David Allen’s ‘Getting Things Done’.) And what I discovered is that the whole conversation begins with timing.
